Fancy Dress Ideas

by Helen Evans

You have the greatest input needed with costume ideas and that is, your ideas. You do not really have to buy or rent a costume if you do not want to. You can use your own innovative ideas and make a completely unique costume. The first step is to know about the situation. You would not want to have some glittering and jazzy costume for a formal dinner. On the other hand you do not want to dress professionally and formally for a hip party.

For a fancy dress party, you probably have the maximum liberty to run your imagination wild. For example, you can play Pinocchio in Mystery in the Library with a cardboard pencil nose and tying it on with white or skin coloured elastic. A heavily built person can colour his skin to become Aladdin’s Genie. Think of the historical character or a character from your favourite Shakespearean play and start preparing the “period-specific” dresses and ensembles to match with it. Sure, this will be an exclusive costume, which no one can copy.

Be imaginative, innovative, and creative with your fancy dress costume. You can even go rummaging through your closet and find the perfect combination of your clothing to have a great costume. You can post a really funny message on an ordinary T-shirt for events like baseball games. You can also portray a klutzy look by wearing clothes that do not match or two different coloured socks.

Ever had a bit of fun with your children’s watercolour tubes? Dress them up in an ordinary shirt and jeans. Then draw a moustache and give them a hat and holster. Then just sit back and watch them enjoying playing cowboys. Costumes can be a powerful visual aid to raise awareness on certain issues.

Let’s say you are trying to address the issue of eating genetically modified fruits and vegetables. You can dress in a tomato or carrot costume, this will help the viewers get more interested when you are talking about the pros and cons of genetically modified fruits and vegetables. This is a good way to make your message stick out in the minds of the viewers and less boring than reading it from somewhere.

Your costume ideas in a sense can add value to your life. It is a reflection of your attitude toward life. If you want to have fun, design a costume that will take you out from your busy life. If you are mad about Discos, the dance craze of the 1970s, you can reflect the same carefree mix of fashion and fun with your costume. As an earnest fan of Marilyn Monroe or Sherlock Homes, you can pay your tribute by dressing up like them. Plan your costumes for all occasions, be it Christmas or Halloween, in a different way. Don’t buy expensive dresses and ready made costumes, instead, design them.

Play My Acoustic Guitar

by Scott M Green

Have you ever paused to listen for a moment to a musician gently strumming an acoustic guitar or performing a blazing, soul-stirring flamenco number? The sounds of an acoustic guitar invoke mystery and a feeling of romance for many people. Most people never stop to consider how versatile and wide-ranging acoustic guitars are, but virtually all of them can enjoy the beautiful music they make.

Is playing an acoustic guitar a skill that you always wanted to take up? You could just look at a guitar and imagine the wonderful melody of notes of your strum. You question how difficult it actually would be the play guitar and how much money you will have to spend to learn how to play.

You think about how fun it would be to play the guitar at family get-togethers or for your friends at parties. But then, you think about how difficult it would be to learn, or how much lessons might cost. Also, you wouldn’t know where to find the time to learn how to play properly.

Even though it may seem that acoustic guitars are magical, that’s not really the case. The music produced is the magic, not the guitar. This is the same as when you were young and learning to use a pencil. After a time you learned to write very well and you soon were able to write essays, book reports and all sorts of things. Your pencil was merely the tool used to create your writing. This is what it’s like with an acoustic guitar. The guitar is the tool that makes your music. Learning the guitar evolves in the same way. When you’re in the music store you play around with a guitar, just as you scribbled with your pencil. You hear what happens each time you move your hands a certain way. When you start to learn to play an acoustic guitar you begin to feel at ease and soon your fingers begin to move correctly on their own. After a while the guitar becomes an extension of your hands and your thoughts begin to flow through it naturally.

Acoustic guitars have a kind of draw to them, but people who have never played guitar before are often amazed by them. It is often assumed that there is much more to the guitar than there actually is. The ability to produce music is almost mystical to some.

Music is such a intense expression of sound and emotion that it can be overwhelming to think that anyone could produce such beautiful sounds. This outlook can make people apprehensive with learning to play an acoustic guitar. Remember, the acoustic guitar was built to speak this language.

Whether you frequently check out the acoustic guitars in the music store just to get the feel of it, or if you have got one standing silent in the corner, take the time to learn. You will always be proud that you’ve spent time mastering the instrument.

A Pirate’s Life

by Todd Massey

Pirate is now the frequently established expression throughout the world for an individual that perpetrates an assortment of wrongs on the ocean. A various points in history they were given specialized names helping to identify them either by region or nationality.

A buccaneer was a pirate that lived in the Caribbean. They were originally French and some English that lived on the island of Hispaniola and the name is derived from the original Indians of the island who had a word called “buccan”. The French word was a person or boucanier and then it became buccaneer. Due to conflicts with the Spanish, the buccaneers hated them for running them off the island.

A Barbary corsair was a name given by the French to Muslim pirates that sailed along the North African and Mediterranean coasts.

Pirates really got their big start in the seas around Greece, where they raided merchants and were used by the warring countries and city-states against each other. At one time they were even used by the city-states as tax collectors due to the fact that so many people feared the pirates.

Unrest and competition between Spain, France and England saw the use of pirates as a successful tool in the many wars these countries fought with each other. Pirate activity would become sanctioned by a government making the pirates theft and treachery legal, as long as the privateers performed their misdeeds against the enemy.

Many times though countries or governments would ban together to help each other rid themselves of pirate infestations.

Pirates would escape to sea running from poverty, escaping the local navy or cruel laws of the land. Pirates needed their own laws on board ship so that they could come together and operate successfully. This inadvertently led to pirates creating what became known as the first true individual democracy in which every pirate had a voice by having an equal vote in what took place on board the ship. But shipboard lawbreakers found they had to face harsh penalties to pay for their transgressions against fellow crew members.

Pirates took care of their own like no other governing body had done before. Around the time in the early to mid 1600’s pirates begin to establish various payments as compensation for body parts lost in the line of duty.

Piracy could be a hard life, dangerous and deadly but it was often preferable to the navy of the day. You could potentially get better pay, better food be treated better and have a say in decisions.

A pirate could be paid large sums of money following a victorious raid. The treasure would be divided and the goods sold for money and then split appropriately. This of course was always done in a port city that gave the pirate opportunity to turn around and spend all his money in a few nights of drink, women and gambling.

What Hypnosis is Not!

by Atticus Jackson

We live in a world today that is full of perceptions, deceptions and misconceptions; it is often hard to tell one from the other when learning about new things.

Of all the many misconceptions in the world, there are many linked with hypnosis. This is why it is very important to seek out and understand the misconceptions before you assume what task you want to accomplish using hypnosis. So to really understand what is really behind the basis of hypnosis, you must first understand what hypnosis is not.

Once you know what hypnosis is not, everything you are left with is what hypnosis is.

The media, movies, and plain old rumor have given hypnosis many false pretenses. The domination of another human ebing, and the complete domination over one’s mind is not what hypnosis is.

Another’s will is also something that you cannot dominate through hypnosis. Complete domination of the world of of human kind is simply not possible through hypnosis, please embark on a new path now if this is your intention.

The endless amounts of misconception seem to surround hypnosis. Power over one’s mind, thoughts, ideas, and actions are usually associated with these misconceptions; this is true in many types of work.

Many false ideas about hypnosis and the associations with hypnosis are created by societies acknowledgment of the power behind hypnotic methods. An example of this being the power of money; When someone has alot of money, it is thought that they must have alot of power. If you do not know how to use your power wisely though, you will fail.

The misconceptions about hypnosis must be wiped from the slate if you are serious about becoming an eloquent and masterful hypnotist.

The most common misconception in the field of hypnosis is that associated with power. Yes it is true that you will own a sort of power over the mind of your subjects, however this is not to say you will be able to control them completely.

The opposite of control is actually happening. Many people are unaware of the fact that hypnosis is, for the most part, just a negotiation with the unconscious mind. Your base of ethics and morals is stored in your unconscious mind, and while a hypnotist can negotiate with parts of the unconcious mind, they will never be able to completely change or control one’s ethics/morals.

The beliefs you hold, your ideas, and your moral standards that you choose to live by are unbreakable and stored in the unconscious. This is your own ethical code.

The complete control over one anotehr is a common myth in hypnosis. A person will only do what they want to do, even if they are in a hypnotic trance. That is why this is a myth.

A common example of this is the ordinary stage hypnotist. These men/women will call for volunterrs from the audience, the volunteers are aware on some level that they will be asked to do certain things without knowing what they are doing, even if they are embarassing.

However on some level in their minds they are volunteering because they crave the attention that comes from being exhibitionists. The volunteers know they will be controlled by the hypnotist and they are consciously okay with that because it does not cause conflict with their moral code.
